Houdini is a very powerful tool used to create procedural and complicated effects, offering unprecedented levels of flexibility and control which will enhance the way you work creatively.
Through out this 8 week CGWorkshop, Niels will teach you how to utilize the conventional elements of this software, how to combine them, easily and efficiently to create abstract and creative results.

The main purpose of this course is for you to experiment and have fun with this tool! Points, Particles, Voxelizing techniques, L-Systems, Mantra techniques... these are just some of the topics that you will cover.

From really abstract effects through to motion design, you will be able to see how limitless the possibilities are as you explore all the dynamic aspects that Houdini has on offer.

Week 1 - Creating life with just some points!
- Create dynamic motion trails procedurally.
- Learn to control their length, their size and how to add Main particles leading the movements.
- Learn how to project trails onto geometry, forming interesting shapes and animations.
- Create your own system of trails and project it on a custom shape you chose.

Week 2 - Fun with Particles
- Learn to create interesting behaviours in particles, easily and efficiently (forces, colliders etc...)
- Attract the particles with a shape, forming custom geometry or logos.
- Create complicated network based on some recursive behaviours.
- Use other solvers to drive particles.
- Use expression and colors to control particles attributes.

- Mix effects on particles to create the most interesting behaviour you can!

Week 3 - Looping and barrel roll
- Use fracture techniques to create procedural pattern with loop tools.
- Create interesting shapes based on destruction.
- Create interesting animation without simulations, driven by expression, noise patterns...
- Create a procedural and motion design cityscape

Week 4 - Voxelize the world!
- Learn how to create a pixel effect on some common FX such as FLIP Fluids, PyroFX or geometry animation.
- Pick an effect and Voxelize it!

Week 5 - L-systems and much more
- Learn the L-Sytems basics to achieve complicated abstract effect with custom rules and animations.
- Create a little animation based on L-systems tool.

Week 6 - You shall not pass!
- Learn how to pass attributes from SOP level to mantra and how to control render parameters with them.
- Creating interesting displacement behaviour combining playing with textures and passing attributes from animation.
- Create your own attributes that are meaningful to pass, from SOP to mantra, at render time.

Week 7 - The Big Project Part One
- Create a complete scene with some of the techniques we've covered (finding the design, the tools, layout of the scene)

Week 8 - The Big Project Part Two
- Continuing the previous scene (Simulations, fine tuning, adding details, rendering and compositing)

Minimum Skill Requirements

Basic Knowledge of Houdini and Mantra
Basic knowledge of compositing techniques (After Effects or Nuke)

Software requirements

Houdini 15 (student edition is good)
A compositing package (After effects or Nuke)
Good graphic card and CPU
