Maurits Cornells Escher was born on June 17, 1898, in Leeuwarden, the capital of the province of Friesland In the northern part of the Netherlands. He spent most of his youth In the city of Arnhem, where he attended secondary school. It was evident even then that he liked to draw, and the drawing teacher at his school, F. W. van der Haagen, encouraged him and instructed young Escher in making some prints, most of them linoleum cuts.
