I am a big fan of Mr. Battles and his spy Quinn as well as his growing cast of supporting characters. I could barely wait for the follow up to The Collected to discover the fate of Orlando as she is one of my favorite characters, period. Having her life in such peril was nerve wracking. But Mr. Battles seldom disappoints.
He continues to write intelligent characters doing intelligent things, like the professionals they are supposed to be. They are tough, smart, complex, vulnerable and believable.
The Description is also smart and complex but not overly so. There is a delicious sense of menace and immediate danger that keeps the reader in suspense to the very end. There is of course a conspiracy and a villain to hate but these are not overplayed. There is even a development at the end that could change the direction of the series.
I realized while reviewing this that I enjoy these books so much because of what they share with other series I enjoy. That is having exceptional people doing exceptional things while making me believe in and care about them at the same time.
